Comings and goings

(Posted 19 February 2014) At the very end of January we said a sad farewell to John and Tricia Rubens as they retired to Cornwall. John was pastor from 1997 to 2012, and after retiring continued as an elder until last month. We wish them a happy retirement. Within days of their departure we were then delighted to rejoice with Tony (our pastor) and Anna on the birth of their third child, Isaac, on 6 February.

Friday 13 September at 6.30pm sees the re-launch of the Pathfinders club for primary school children (years 1-6). We are also excited about the launch of a new club at the same time for older children in years 7-9. Thanksgiving and Gift Weekend

(posted 21 April 2013)

This weekend is our annual Thanksgiving and Gift Weekend. It is particularly poignant this year as we have just finished paying off the mortgage on our building many years ahead of schedule. We are grateful to God for his provision and can now look to financing some exciting outreach possibilities in the coming months.

We have recently set up a Facebook page Facebook.com/ AycliffeEC.  Ladies' Prayer Meeting

(Posted 1 January 2013)

Please note that the time and venue of the Ladies' weekly  prayer meeting has now changed. It is still on Wednesdays but now in the afternoon at 1.30pm. Rather than meeting in various homes, the meetings will all  be at the church. This will allow better facilities for those ladies who have young children with them.

Shoe Box Sunday

(Posted 25 November 2012)

Today we joined in Operation Christmas Child and presented shoe boxes filled with Christmas gifts for sending to needy children across the world. We pray that those receiving them may be blessed.

Christmas is coming...

(Posted 19 November 2012)

We are filling shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child in November. In December we plan a church family party and will invite all those individuals and families we've met in the last year. There will also be carol services and a tea on 23 December, and a service at 10 am on Christmas morning.

Tony Simpson ordained and inducted to the Pastorate at Aycliffe

(Posted September 2012)

We were all thrilled on Saturday 22 September at the ordination and induction of our new Pastor, Tony Simpson. We were joined by friends from a number of local churches, as well as family and friends of Tony and his wife Anna from further afield. Some previous members of the church also returned to Aycliffe for the occasion. About 120 people in total filled the building and the service was followed by a buffet tea and a great time of fellowship. A number of visitors stayed over till the Sunday and no one seemed to want to go home after the Sunday services! For all this we praise God!

The service was led by John Rubens, the previous pastor, and the ordination/induction by Robert Strivens, Principal of London Theological Seminary, who also preached. Several other pastors participated.

"ON YOUR MARKS" Holiday Bible Club

(Posted 14 April 2012)

The "On your marks" Holiday Bible Club was held on 2 to 4 April 2012 for children in school years 1-6.

We had about a dozen youngsters, made up of the Friday Pathfinder Club children, together with some of their friends who had never been before. Every day it was evident that each one was keen to come back the following day to take part in the activities.  An added incentive was the accumulation of medals, which could be converted into prizes at the end of each day, or saved up.

We are particularly blessed at Aycliffe Evangelical with a high proportion of school teachers and others experienced in young people’s work, and so we had a variety of new games, crafts and quizzes, suited to the different age groups.

Each day began with registration and a short welcome in the main Hall followed by about half an hour of games which featured, amongst others, the "yes/no" game, the "bean" game, "land sea ship", the "Yogi bear" game, and "sausage and beans".  The youngsters then split into different age groups for stories and crafts about Jesus calming the storm, Jesus healing the leper and Jesus and the paralyzed man, all taken from Mark's Gospel.  Crafts included making crowns, a storm scene, and activity sheets for colouring, with word-searches and puzzles.

In the final half hour there was a song especially adapted for the Holiday Bible Club entitled "King of the Universe".  We learned a new verse each day following the theme of each session.  The youngsters then took part in a quiz on what they had learnt.

Neil then gave a short talk each day on the meaning of Easter, starting with Palm Sunday and then Good Friday and finally Easter Sunday.

The memory verse for the week is more often thought of at Christmas rather than Easter, but it summarises why Jesus came into the World:

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1 v21)

This was the first Holiday Bible Club that has taken place at Aycliffe Evangelical Church for many years and it was encouraging to see the team work well together and for the children to thoroughly enjoy themselves. We look forward to running similar clubs in the future.

Pathfinders

(Posted in 2011)

Each Friday (6.30 - 7.30pm) in May we are going to be running a four week pilot of a new children's club for children in school years 1 - 6. It will be called Pathfinders and there will be games,  craft, Bible stories and lots, lots more. If the pilot is successful it is hoped to make this a regular meeting later in the year.

The name "Pathfinders" was chosen as this was the name of the children's club we ran in the area around 15 years ago and it is hoped the name might bring back positive memories to those who came and who may now have children of their own they would encourage to attend.
